GRETCHEN HEDGES SRIGLEY SEITSINGER
April 11, 1919 to January 3, 2010
Gretchen's
1936
Ashville High School
Alumni Picture
Gretchen Hedges Srigley
Seitsinger was born in Ashville, Ohio, April 11,
1919, the third child in a family of four children.
She died January 3, 2010.
She graduated from
Ashville-Harrison High School, as valedictorian in
1936. She was a graduate of Ohio State University
with a B.A. major in Bacteriology. While a student,
she worked for the department chairman assistant in
research and records. She worked as a medical
intern in Medical Technology at Children’s Hospital,
Columbus, Ohio.
Gretchen owned the
Gretchen A. Hedges Medical Laboratory in Columbus,
Ohio from 1941 to 1943. She married Dr. Robert
Sprague Srigley and worked at various hospitals
where he was stationed in the military at Atlanta,
Georgia, Columbus, Ohio and in South Carolina.
Gretchen and Dr. Srigley
had three children: Robert Srigley, Pam Stare and
Penny Sherly. They settled in Hollis, Oklahoma,
opening and operating a hospital. After a killing
schedule for 10 years, they gave the hospital to the
Methodist Church and moved to Altus, Oklahoma,
opening a medical clinic practice. In 1973, Dr.
Srigley passed away.
Gretchen volunteered
with the Board of Global Ministries of the Methodist
Church for short term work, working for the church’s
Eskimo Hospital in Nome, Alaska, ending her job by
negotiating the sale of the hospital to the Eskimos.
She returned to college,
earning two Master Degrees in Business
Administration and Allied Health Education. She had
made plans to work for the Peace Corp in Chile when
she was called on by the Board of Global Ministries
to take over Newark Methodist Maternity Hospital in
El Paso, Texas, which was on the verge of
bankruptcy.
She also took on the
Houchen Day Care Center. Thus was created the
Friendship Square which she completely turned around
and expanded the Center to include a Senior Center.
Gretchen was also a
Laity Speaker for the Board of Global Ministries and
the Methodist Church. It was during this time she
met and married Ralph E. Seitsinger. They celebrated
their 25th anniversary in 2009. After
the hospital was closed, Gretchen and Ralph owned
and operated a Travel Agency for a short period of
time; then they sold it and Gretchen retired.
Gretchen was active in
various civic organizations in El Paso and, prior to
that, she held various positions in organizations
such as the Stoddard Del Norte Daughter’s of the
American Revolution, Women’s Club, PEO, Gideons, and
was a current member of Vista Ysleta Methodist
Church and was a lifetime Deaconess in the Methodist
Church. Hers was a lifetime of service.
Gretchen is survived by
her husband, Ralph Seitsinger, three children, five
step-children, ten grandchildren, and four
great-grandchildren, and numerous admirers for her
life of service.
TINY ADMINISTRATOR HAS
BIG IDEAS
The office of Gretchen
Srigley, the administrator of Newark Methodist
Hospital, is pocket-sized—like she is. The head
nurse shares the office. Records are filed in what
used to be a walk-in closet.
The office may be small,
the hospital small, and her budget small, but the
little white-haired lady builds big ideas.
Also, the executive
director of Friendship Square – an entire square
block of Methodist ministries that includes the
hospital, a clinic, Houchen Community Center and
Houchen Day Care – she dreams of a bigger hospital
and expanded programs for her little community. If
history has anything to do with it, Mrs. Srigley may
well pull it off.
Born in Ohio, she
graduated from college early with a degree in
medical technology. By the time she was 21, she
owned her own lab, a rarity for a young woman in
pre-WW II America.
But even then, though
she says she wasn’t a “holy roller” she felt she had
some sort of ministry for the Methodist Church in
her future.
Her work at her lab
brought her in contact with a Harvard graduate, Dr.
Robert Srigley, a physician from a long line of
medical experts, They married and had three
children, but Mrs. Srigley didn’t abandon her work.
She and her husband
moved to Hollis, a small town in southwest
Oklahoma. They started their own hospital, and
started Oklahoma’s first walk-in blood bank.
Although it was after WW II by that time, “they had
no technicians to do blood transfusions.” she adds.
The couple eventually
gave the hospital to the church and started a new
medical clinic.
Then Srigley died from a
sudden heart attack in 1973. At first, Mrs. Srigley
was a little lost. “I thought to myself, what do I
do now. My work was here. There went my job. she
says.
She probably could have
retired and played bridge the rest of her life.
“But I just couldn’t do that”. Instead, she
contacted the Methodist Church’s New York-based
Board of Global Ministries who coordinates and helps
fund the church’s world-wide missionary work. She
offered to do short-term work wherever the ministry
needed her.
From 1975 to 1977 she
was administrator for the church’s Eskimo Hospital
in Nome, Alaska, ending her job by negotiating the
sale of the hospital to the Eskimos.
After her Alaska
experience, she decided to back to school. She got
two master’s degrees: in Business Administration
and in Allied Health Education at Central State
University, Edmond, Oklahoma.
Mrs Srigley had made
plans to do Peace Corps work, teaching orphans in
Chile, when the Missions Board called again. Would
she go to El Paso where the Methodist Hospital was
on the verge of bankruptcy”?
“It felt right, so I
came here”, she says, looking fondly around her
office, bright green plants hanging in front of the
one window.
She went to work in
December, 1979 and turned the hospital’s fortunes
around. The hospital now has 85 percent occupancy,
large for El Paso.
The only woman hospital
administrator for the church, she also had a knack
for getting things done elsewhere on the Square.
She took a tour of Houchen Center and saw its big
windows had been boarded up and had chicken wire
over them. She tore the boards down and created
drapes out of old sheets for the windows.
One Friendship Square
Board Member was so impressed with Mrs. Srigley’s
energy that she donated $1,000. Mrs Srigley used
the money gleefully to paint the center.
Only the Day Care
receives outside support – from United Way, she
says. The Missions Board provides part of the
Hospital and Houchen funds. But most of the
center’s budget, she ways, depends on donations,
volunteer work and good will.
She’d like to build on
that goodwill to expand their Senior Citizens
Program. She’d like to make Newark Hospital into
the clinic and build a whole new, two-story hospital
where the clinic is now.
She built her own career
on dreams that came true, and she hopes to build
more of those tiny glimmers of dreams into reality.
“If I had my druthers”,
she says with a sigh, “I’d rather have my husband
back, but when that door closed, I feel I did do the
right thing in building another life.”

Rose,
The news of Jack Lemon's massive coronary last week and death on
Friday devastated me. As a child, I attended the same church as
Jack and my sister and I sang in the junior choir which was
directed by Rose Glitt.
Jack sang in the adult choir and I always looked forward to
hearing his voice and always hoped that he would sing a solo.
This man, with his incredible voice would sing "How Great Thou
Art" in a way that could never be duplicated by another singer,
male or female. I have heard many others sing this, but never
with the love or conviction that Jack did. He sang this song
not with his voice, but with his heart and soul. This man
touched me deeply as a child and has continued to hold a very
special place in my heart to this day.
I made certain on my annual visits home to stop by the museum to
get my annual hugs from Jack and my other favorite fella,
Charlie Morrison, whom I have the deepest respect for also. As
we go through life, we never know who will touch our hearts, and
who will make a lasting impression. I am just thankful that
Jack was one of those people to me.
I cried when I learned of Jack's death and was already feeling
emptiness inside of me that I knew could never be replaced.
Then, I asked myself, why are you crying? You know that Jack is
where he has always wanted to be; he is with his Lord and
Savior, who he has praised all his life.
I can only imagine what was being prepared in Heaven to welcome
Jack home. The Angels were probably making a special place for
Jack to come and join their glorious choir. All of those who
went to Heaven before Jack, just waiting to hear him sing once
more, as he was loved by so many people.
I have no doubt that Jack would have been one of God's disciples
had he lived during the Biblical days. Jack was a witness to
everyone who knew and loved him. I am honored to have known him
and to have been a part of his life.
Godspeed Jack.
Respectfully,
Marsha "Cremeans" Johnson

I too have something to say about that fine man
named Jack Lemon. I was a member of his teenage
Sunday School Class at Ashville E. U. B. Church
at that time. My memories of Jack are that he
had so much compassion in his heart for
everyone. He knew the Bible inside out and could
relate the meaning even to the teenagers in his
class. He found no fault in any of us and showed
us the love in his heart that so many of today's
children are longing for. He always had time for
us.
He loved his family, his Church and his country.
My dad, Richard Cook, and Jack were in
two quartets together. One was barbershop called
the Two by Fours Quartet. The other was a
Christian quartet and if my memory serves me
correctly, it was the Revelations. All of the
men in both quartets loved to sing, and they
really made some music. Jack was a great
soloist too, and you could tell that nothing was
ever "put on", it was real.
The community will miss this great man and I
hope that everyone who knew him will have a
wonderful memory of a wonderful man. He was
truly "one in a million".
Thanks and love to the family at this time,
------------------------ // ------------------------
I first came to know Jack when David Poluxt of
First Byte Computer Center and I decided to get some information
about the museum for the Ashville website. We took a video
of him giving us a tour and boy will I cherish it ever so much.
After that first visit, I came to volunteer at
the museum and got to know the fellows there and that's how I
became close to Jack.
Such a precious man he is, although it be
spiritual now. As well as being intelligent and loving, he
was also a "stern" individual and would let you know how he
thought things should be and that's how, near the end of his
sojourn on this earth, he came to be nicknamed "Bull Dog" to
some of us.
As time and age does to most who live as long as
Jack did, there were periods of time when, as he sat in his
chair (each had a special chair of their own), he occasionally
fell asleep. I remember watching him there wondering what
all he had seen and done in his life.
We would get a kick out of him sitting there and
would joke a bit about it, but I have to say that if a visitor
came in and he woke up and gave them a tour, it ended up being a
visit most would remember for a very long time. He was so
knowledgeable about Ashville history and the items that reside
in the museum. I sometimes followed and listened in awe at the
depth of knowledge and facts that he had. The museum won't
be the same now that he's moved on.
As he worked 44 years for N & W Railroad, so was
he with the Ashville Area Heritage Society... a "LIFER",
dedicated to doing the best job he could and I know both
entities were better off having him on board.
Charlie Morrison and Charles Cordle
have worked with Jack for so long they were like
brothers. My heart goes out to them as well as to
the Lemon family in this emotional time.
We Love him and miss him too.
What a shining example of God's work...
Michael, Janet and Hope Moore

Our Sir Lance a Lot
A Brother, A Father, A Friend, A Hero
Growing up,
as I looked up to him, I depended on my big brother,
and he
protected and taught me well,
I wanted to
follow him everywhere, and he even let me sometimes,
and boy
were those times swell!
I still
feel those same feelings now,
as I
remember our times together, when we were young and as we grew.
Strong and
wild as were so many a Moore,
he had a
bit of trouble and a choice was to be made,
It wasn’t
long before he was in the Army,
doing a
1960’s Vietnam tour.
He often
told of those times that ravaged his mind and soul,
the war,
the killing, the Agent Orange, and explosions too close for
comfort.
He was in
the midst of the hell,
working as
an MP in the 23rd MP's Americal
Division,
and he performed his duties well.
A back injury bought our hero Lance home, but the war would
linger in his mind.
Then along came family, loving Roberta brought forth so many!
Our next generation, another set of Moores!
The boys are handsome and the girls are so pretty!
Precious, each and every one.
It was evident that he cared so much for them,
He’ll never stop Loving them, I know,
Even though his journey on this earth is done.
As time went on, to the memories of Nam he paid his toll,
Etched forever in his mind, deep in his soul,
He was still fighting the battles, trying to cope,
Fighting the physical pain and the mental strain that some call
PTSD,
I knew it was real for him.
All of his friends knew as well, for they heard the stories too,
It seemed it was all he could talk about.
Some of his friends could relate and for some it wasn’t so easy,
We can’t help to see there are others dealing with the same
hell,
At times we can only talk to them and wish them well.
Lance, in his effort to deal with it, turned to the Holy Bible.
He amazed me how well he knew and could recall the verses.
Digging so deeply into it, he deciphered and analyzed and found
some answers.
He was such an intelligent man!
I wish that I could have understood the many ideas that he
talked about,
Self-perpetuated energy production...or whatever it was.
I know that he was convinced and sent in for patent information.
Mysteriously, it was accepted with enthusiasm but ended in
secrecy.
If we could have only found a way to tap into his genius.
Still, with all his potential, it was easier to handle the pain
and he was at peace
when he had his medication. I believe it helped him cope.
It was good to see him without so much pain
but worrisome when he took too much.
On February 2nd, the Lord came for him while he lay
sleeping.
He laid down to take a nap at his friends place who covered him
with a blanket.
This time the medication took away his pain but it also took
away
a Brother, a Father, a Friend and a Hero.
WE’LL ALL MISS YOU LANCE AND LOVE YOU.
For those who were true friends of Lances and who truly cared
for him,
THANK YOU WITH ALL OUR HEARTS.

------------------------ // ------------------------
It was always nice to see Jim's
jolly face at our AAHS general meeting and at a Kiwanis meeting
because you knew there would be a chuckle somewhere in the
evening. I'll miss that for sure.
I didn't know Jim as well as many
others in the Village but what I saw was a kind, gentle, and
considerate gentleman. With the Donna Jean Irwin Memorial
Scholarship and all the other things mentioned above his picture,
it
shows that he cared for others.
One of the lasting memories that I
have of Jim was of him in the Village park tossing out candy and
goodies for the children's Easter Egg Hunt in 2006 provided by
Ashville Kiwanis. He was there giving back to the
community and enjoying it.
His departing took us by surprise
and because of that, will take time to adjust to. Right
now, as I write this, I wish our last handshake was a hug
instead...... Love, Michael and Family
