Rose,
The news of Jack Lemon's massive coronary last week and death on
Friday devastated me. As a child, I attended the same church as
Jack and my sister and I sang in the junior choir which was
directed by Rose Glitt.
Jack sang in the adult choir and I always looked forward to
hearing his voice and always hoped that he would sing a solo.
This man, with his incredible voice would sing "How Great Thou
Art" in a way that could never be duplicated by another singer,
male or female. I have heard many others sing this, but never
with the love or conviction that Jack did. He sang this song
not with his voice, but with his heart and soul. This man
touched me deeply as a child and has continued to hold a very
special place in my heart to this day.
I made certain on my annual visits home to stop by the museum to
get my annual hugs from Jack and my other favorite fella,
Charlie Morrison, whom I have the deepest respect for also. As
we go through life, we never know who will touch our hearts, and
who will make a lasting impression. I am just thankful that
Jack was one of those people to me.
I cried when I learned of Jack's death and was already feeling
emptiness inside of me that I knew could never be replaced.
Then, I asked myself, why are you crying? You know that Jack is
where he has always wanted to be; he is with his Lord and
Savior, who he has praised all his life.
I can only imagine what was being prepared in Heaven to welcome
Jack home. The Angels were probably making a special place for
Jack to come and join their glorious choir. All of those who
went to Heaven before Jack, just waiting to hear him sing once
more, as he was loved by so many people.
I have no doubt that Jack would have been one of God's disciples
had he lived during the Biblical days. Jack was a witness to
everyone who knew and loved him. I am honored to have known him
and to have been a part of his life.
Godspeed Jack.
Respectfully,
Marsha "Cremeans" Johnson
------------------------ // ------------------------
I too have something to say about that fine man
named Jack Lemon. I was a member of his teenage
Sunday School Class at Ashville E. U. B. Church
at that time. My memories of Jack are that he
had so much compassion in his heart for
everyone. He knew the Bible inside out and could
relate the meaning even to the teenagers in his
class. He found no fault in any of us and showed
us the love in his heart that so many of today's
children are longing for. He always had time for
us.
He loved his family, his Church and his country.
My dad, Richard Cook, and Jack were in
two quartets together. One was barbershop called
the Two by Fours Quartet. The other was a
Christian quartet and if my memory serves me
correctly, it was the Revelations. All of the
men in both quartets loved to sing, and they
really made some music. Jack was a great
soloist too, and you could tell that nothing was
ever "put on", it was real.
The community will miss this great man and I
hope that everyone who knew him will have a
wonderful memory of a wonderful man. He was
truly "one in a million".
Thanks and love to the family at this time,
------------------------ // ------------------------
I first came to know Jack when David Poluxt of
First Byte Computer Center and I decided to get some information
about the museum for the Ashville website. We took a video
of him giving us a tour and boy will I cherish it ever so much.
After that first visit, I came to volunteer at
the museum and got to know the fellows there and that's how I
became close to Jack.
Such a precious man he is, although it be
spiritual now. As well as being intelligent and loving, he
was also a "stern" individual and would let you know how he
thought things should be and that's how, near the end of his
sojourn on this earth, he came to be nicknamed "Bull Dog" to
some of us.
As time and age does to most who live as long as
Jack did, there were periods of time when, as he sat in his
chair (each had a special chair of their own), he occasionally
fell asleep. I remember watching him there wondering what
all he had seen and done in his life.
We would get a kick out of him sitting there and
would joke a bit about it, but I have to say that if a visitor
came in and he woke up and gave them a tour, it ended up being a
visit most would remember for a very long time. He was so
knowledgeable about Ashville history and the items that reside
in the museum. I sometimes followed and listened in awe at the
depth of knowledge and facts that he had. The museum won't
be the same now that he's moved on.
As he worked 44 years for N & W Railroad, so was
he with the Ashville Area Heritage Society... a "LIFER",
dedicated to doing the best job he could and I know both
entities were better off having him on board.
Charlie Morrison and Charles Cordle
have worked with Jack for so long they were like
brothers. My heart goes out to them as well as to
the Lemon family in this emotional time.
We Love him and miss him too.
What a shining example of God's work...
Michael, Janet and Hope Moore

Our Sir Lance a Lot
A Brother, A Father, A Friend, A Hero
Growing up,
as I looked up to him, I depended on my big brother,
and he
protected and taught me well,
I wanted to
follow him everywhere, and he even let me sometimes,
and boy
were those times swell!
I still
feel those same feelings now,
as I
remember our times together, when we were young and as we grew.
Strong and
wild as were so many a Moore,
he had a
bit of trouble and a choice was to be made,
It wasn’t
long before he was in the Army,
doing a
1960’s Vietnam tour.
He often
told of those times that ravaged his mind and soul,
the war,
the killing, the Agent Orange, and explosions too close for
comfort.
He was in
the midst of the hell,
working as
an MP in the 23rd MP's Americal
Division,
and he performed his duties well.
A back injury bought our hero Lance home, but the war would
linger in his mind.
Then along came family, loving Roberta brought forth so many!
Our next generation, another set of Moores!
The boys are handsome and the girls are so pretty!
Precious, each and every one.
It was evident that he cared so much for them,
He’ll never stop Loving them, I know,
Even though his journey on this earth is done.
As time went on, to the memories of Nam he paid his toll,
Etched forever in his mind, deep in his soul,
He was still fighting the battles, trying to cope,
Fighting the physical pain and the mental strain that some call
PTSD,
I knew it was real for him.
All of his friends knew as well, for they heard the stories too,
It seemed it was all he could talk about.
Some of his friends could relate and for some it wasn’t so easy,
We can’t help to see there are others dealing with the same
hell,
At times we can only talk to them and wish them well.
Lance, in his effort to deal with it, turned to the Holy Bible.
He amazed me how well he knew and could recall the verses.
Digging so deeply into it, he deciphered and analyzed and found
some answers.
He was such an intelligent man!
I wish that I could have understood the many ideas that he
talked about,
Self-perpetuated energy production...or whatever it was.
I know that he was convinced and sent in for patent information.
Mysteriously, it was accepted with enthusiasm but ended in
secrecy.
If we could have only found a way to tap into his genius.
Still, with all his potential, it was easier to handle the pain
and he was at peace
when he had his medication. I believe it helped him cope.
It was good to see him without so much pain
but worrisome when he took too much.
On February 2nd, the Lord came for him while he lay
sleeping.
He laid down to take a nap at his friends place who covered him
with a blanket.
This time the medication took away his pain but it also took
away
a Brother, a Father, a Friend and a Hero.
WE’LL ALL MISS YOU LANCE AND LOVE YOU.
For those who were true friends of Lances and who truly cared
for him,
THANK YOU WITH ALL OUR HEARTS.
